India: No money for last rites, two daughters arrested for throwing mother’s body on the road in Telangana

Dubai: Two daughters in the Indian city of Hyderabad didn’t have the money for the last rites of their dead mother, so they decided to throw her body on a roadside. The two were arrested, on Tuesday. Social media is shocked by the incident that happened in the state of Telangana as many users says that such cases are increasing day by day especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A Facebook user DineshTripati commented: “ Its heart wrenching! Instead of being cremated, the body is thrown out. Really painful.”

The deceased was a 70-year-old who was later identified as Mary Gracie.

According to the media reports, the two daughters were identified as Manjula and Priyanka. The deceased was staying with her two daughters in Mangarbasti of Habibnagar police station area.

Another Facebook user Jayesh commented: “It’s a shame to call ourselves human. No value for relations.”

Talking to the media sources, police officials said: “Gracie died on Tuesday night. During this time, both the daughters did not have money for the last rites, so they decided to throw away the corpse of their own mother. They seeked the help of auto drivers Khader and Sailu, and the body of the old woman was thrown in the road at midnight. During that time the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC personnel) saw them and informed the police.

“During this time, the police immediately reached the spot. All four were taken into custody. Nowadays many such cases are increasing day by day in which the corpses are being thrown on the road,” he added.
