Kuwait: Food ration cards for 60,000 domestic workers cancelled

Kuwait City: The Ministry of Trade announced that they will be cancelling 60,000 food ration cards of domestic workers that are no longer working under their employers as of the beginning of January, Al Rai reported.

###

A source told Al Rai that some of the domestic workers have left the country and their sponsors have not updated their ration cards so they kept getting an extra share even though the domestic worker no longer is employed by them.

###

The decision will save around 4.5 million Kuwaiti dinars annually.

###

The Minister of Trade, Faisal Al Medlej, pointed out that domestic workers get the exact same benefits from the food ration card compared to Kuwaiti citizens.

###

As for new domestic workers, the Ministry of Trade demanded that they be included under their sponsors’ ration card immediately, especially since many people have changed their work permits without updating their data therefore they are unaccounted for when distributing food rations.

###

The Ministry of Trade provides all Kuwaitis with subsidised food necessities ranging from rice and bread to oil and chicken. A ration card is give to each Kuwaiti home and the domestic workers are accounted for as part of the household.
