Pakistan Prime Minister Khan vows to bring judge’s killers to justice

Islamabad: Prime Minister Imran Khan vowed to bring the killers of the Pakistani judge to justice soon after Aftab Afridi was shot dead with three of his family members near Swabi in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province.

Khan strongly condemned the murder and vowed that “The perpetrators of this gruesome act will be apprehended & dealt with full severity of the law.”

Afridi, a judge of the Swat anti-terrorism court (ATC), was killed along with his wife, daughter and three-year-old grandson and his driver injured when unidentified assailants opened fire on his car on Sunday. The attack occurred when the judge and his family were travelling from the Swat Valley in the northwest to the capital city of Islamabad, district police official Shoaib Khan said.

“The judge, his wife and two other [family members] were killed on the spot while his driver and guard suffered serious injuries,” the police official said. KP inspector general of police Dr Sanaullah Abbasi said the police is investigating the possible motives behind the attack and asserted that “the accused will be arrested soon.” No one has yet claimed responsibility for the shooting.

Afridi served as one of the judges at Pakistan’s anti-terrorism courts which were established to hear cases of those charged with terrorist activities.

KP chief minister Mahmood Khan described the attack as a cowardly and cruel attack. “They [attackers] won’t be able to escape the law,” he said, directing the police officials to apprehend the culprits soon. Pakistan Bar Council also condemned the cold-blooded murder of the judge and his family. “It is deeply disturbing for the legal fraternity that a respectable judicial officer was murdered in such a brutal manner,” the statement said.
