Pakistan: Sindh launches chip-based smart cards for vehicles’ registration

Karachi: After much delay, the Sindh government has finally launched the system of issuing a smart card carrying security features for registration of motor vehicles across the province.

###

The new system will replace the decades-old one of a registration book used for manual registration of motor vehicles. The chip-based smart card will be used to register commercial and private vehicles, including two-wheelers and four-wheelers. Both new and old vehicles will be issued the new smart card. Owners of the old vehicles possessing the manual registration books will be given the option of switching to the new smart card. The new system is backed up by a computer database of the vehicles.

Sindh Excise and Taxation Minister Mukesh Kumar Chawla said that new system would provide the opportunity of swift registration of vehicles and protection against tampering. He said the new system would also put an end to use of fake registration books in use in the province.

He said the smart card system would also be helpful for the law-enforcement agencies to swiftly determine the ownership of vehicles. The provincial minister said that the Sindh Excise Department had already introduced online submission of motor vehicles tax. He urged vehicle owners in the province to take advantage of the new system of vehicles’ registration.

###

Earlier this year, the Sindh Assembly passed into law the Provincial Motor Vehicles’ (Amendment) Bill-2020 to amend the Motor Vehicles’ Ordinance-1965 for issuing smart cards carrying security features for registration of vehicles. The new vehicles in Sindh will be issued the smart card against a fee of Rs 750.
