The tour comes two weeks after the announcement of a US-mediated peace treaty between the UAE and Israel.

Bahrain was among the first Arab countries to hail the landmark accord between the UAE and Israel.

During talks with Pompeo, King Hamad underlined the importance of intensifying efforts to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict based on the two-state solution including a sovereign independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital according to UN resolutions and a 2002 Arab peace initiative, Bahrain’s official news agency BNA reported.

The Bahraini monarch also hailed the “pivotal” US role in pushing forward the peace process and stability in the Middle East, and confronting Iranian meddling in the region’s affairs, the agency added.

###

Bahrain is keen to enhance “strategic partnership” with the US, BNA quoted King Hamad as telling Pompeo.

Bahrain, a longtime US ally, is home to the US Navy’s 5th Fleet.

“Honoured to meet with His Majesty Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa in Bahrain. I thanked him for our continued friendship and strategic partnership,” Pompeo tweeted after talks with the monarch.

###

“We remain committed to building peace and security to advance greater unity among Gulf countries, and counter the threat from Iran,” he added.

###

Earlier in the day, Pompeo met Bahraini Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa. “We discussed the importance of building regional peace and stability, including the importance of Gulf unity and countering Iran’s malign influence in the region,” Pompeo said in a tweet.

Bahrain is among an Arab Quartet, including the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt that severed diplomatic and transportation links with the Gulf emirate of Qatar in mid-2017 over its support for terrorism. US efforts to end the rift have not borne fruit yet.
