Prince Charles in Kuwait on condolence visit
Kuwait City: Britain’s Prince Charles, Prince of Wales, arrived in Kuwait on Sunday to pay his respects to the new Emir, Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmed Al Sabah on the passing of the late Emir Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmed Al Sabah.
On September 30, a day after the 91-year old Emir passed away, the official Twitter account of the British Royal Family relayed a message from the Queen of England stating, “He will be long remembered by all who work for regional stability, understanding between nations and between faiths, and for the humanitarian cause.”
Lebanese President Michel Aoun also arrived in Kuwait to pay his respects today.
The United States Secretary of Defence, Mark Esper, travelled to Kuwait to offer his condolences. The Secretary arrived in Kuwait, with the presidential delegation, on behalf of President Trump and the United States of America.
The Secretary also met with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sheikh Ahmed Nasser Al Mohammed Al Sabah, to discuss “security cooperation and commitment to the advancement and modernisation of Kuwait’s forces,” a statement by the White House said.

The press statement also mentioned that Esper reflected with Sheikh Nawaf that the late Emir was “truly the Sheikh of diplomats … HH Emir Sheikh Sabah set Kuwait upon a prosperous path to sustained peace and safety in cooperation with the Gulf Cooperation Council, with whom he was a tireless mediator capable of bridging insurmountable divides in pursuit regional stability and security.”
Meanwhile, the head of the Iraqi parliament, Muhammad Al Halbousi, arrived to Kuwait on Sunday to offer his condolences to Sheikh Nawaf.
Sheikh Sabah, passed away at 4am on September 29 in the United States.
Shortly after, the Amiri Diwan announced the passing of the late Emir, Sheikh Nawaf, previously the crown prince and deputy Emir, was appointed the new Emir of Kuwait. In accordance with Article 60 of the Kuwaiti constitution, Sheikh Nawaf, 83, took a constitutional oath in front of the National Assembly on September 30.
The Emir was admitted to hospital on July 18 for medical checks and then, a day later, underwent a successful surgery. On July 23, the Emir was flown to the United States to complete his medical treatment. The Emir’s office did not disclose the reason for the surgery or details of what treatment the Emir was going to receive in the US.
