Qatar sets Shura Council polls for 2021

Cairo: Qatar will hold a long-delayed election for its consultative Shura Council next year, the emirate’s ruler Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani has said.

The election was originally set for 2007, but has been repeatedly postponed.

“We are taking an important step for consolidating traditions of Qatari Shura to develop the legislative process with wider participation from citizens,” Tamim told the Shura Council.

In the election, set for next October, voters will elect 30 members of the 45-strong council. The emir will appoint 15 others. All of them were previously appointed by the emir.

The council offers consultation on draft laws.
