Rey Mysterio Now Rumored for WrestleMania, News on His Opponent

The wrestling universe was buzzing back in January when Rey Mysterio returned to WWE and entered the men’s Royal Rumble match. Mysterio’s participation in the match was completely unexpected, and fans clearly missed Mysterio, because the YouTube video of featuring Mysterio’s return posted by WWE has garnered millions of views. Rey Mysterio did not sign with WWE after appearing in the match, but he recently confirmed that he is still having talks with the company about coming back soon. Rey Mysterio is currently in high demand as he is working matches in several different promotions including New Japan Pro Wrestling, but it sounds like a WWE return may be coming a lot sooner than expected.
Mysterio just recently visited WWE again when the company hosted a live event in his hometown of San Diego, California. On the surface, it sounds like Mysterio may have just been there to visit friends backstage, but it is now being reported that Mysterio was backstage once again during last night’s Smackdown show in the Staples Center in Los Angeles. According to Justin Barrasso of Sports Illustrated, the reason why Mysterio was backstage during the Smackdown show last night is because he was there to finalize a deal which will see him return to WWE. After weeks of speculation on his status, it now seems possible that Mysterio could be rejoining WWE after all.

Breaking: Per WWE sources, Rey Mysterio is backstage working out details tonight at SmackDown for a match at WrestleMania. The rumored opponent is John Cena.

The reported re-signing of Rey Mysterio just so happens to coincide perfectly with the buildup to WrestleMania. Who will Mysterio face at the show if he does come back to WWE? The original report claims that John Cena could be facing Mysterio at the event. Cena just returned to Smackdown last night with the goal of getting onto the WrestleMania card. Cena had been rumored to face The Undertaker at WrestleMania, and while that match could definitely still happen, Mysterio’s re-signing could result in a change of plans for Cena. In the meantime, Mysterio will be having at least one match in NJPW against Jushin “Thunder” Liger at the Strong Style Evolved event in Long Beach, California on March 25th.
