Saudi officials reassert strong links with US

Cairo: Saudi Arabia has reaffirmed decades-long ties with the US, confirming interest in cooperating with the new administration of President Joe Biden.

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal Bin Farhan said in a phone call with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken that Riyadh looks forward to working with Washington to face common challenges and maintain regional peace and security, the Saudi news agency SPA reported.

During a phone call made by Blinken Friday, the two officials also reviewed “historical and strategic relations” between the two countries, SPA added.

Historic speech

In a key foreign policy speech, he made Thursday at the US State Department, Biden pledged commitment to Saudi Arabia’s defence against threats from Iran-supported proxies.

Saudi Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Adel Al Jubair hailed Biden’s speech as historic.

“President Biden’s speech was historic. He confirmed America’s commitment to work with friends & allies to resolve conflicts and deal with challenges. We look forward to working with our friends in the US to end conflicts and confront challenges, as we have for over seven decades,” Al Jubair wrote on Twitter.

“Our countries have spilled blood in the liberation of Kuwait and in combatting al-Qaeda, including in Yemen, and Daesh in Syria, and we will continue to stand together to stand up to our common enemies,” he added.
