Students joined by Shaniera Akram to clean Karachi’s famous Clifton beach

Karachi: School students and people belonging to different walks of life took part in a beach cleaning exercise to keep clean Karachi’s shoreline and also to improve its coastal environment.

Administration of the District South, in whose jurisdiction Karachi’s Clifton beach is located, and Students’ Helpline Association organized the beach cleaning activity.

District Municipal Corporation South of Karachi provided machinery and manpower to conduct the cleanliness drive. Shaniera Akram, wife of former star cricketer of Pakistan Waseem Akram, especially took part in the cleanliness campaign along with the students.

Speaking on the occasion Deputy Commissioner (DC) of District South of Karachi, Irshad Ali Sodhar, said the Clifton beach of the city was one of the busiest recreational spots in the city.

He said that people not from Karachi but from all over Pakistan visited the Clifton beach. He said that ensuring cleanliness at the Clifton’s beach of the city went a long way in promoting the positive image of Pakistan as the coastal area of the city was also visited by the foreigners.

He said that constant dumping of municipal waste, plastic shopping bags, and construction debris at the coastline served as a major source of marine pollution. He said that more dust bins would be placed at the beach while civil society would also be involved to ensure cleanliness of the city’s coastline on a permanent basis.

Sorting the issue

The DC South also expressed gratitude to Shaniera Akram for highlighting the issue of municipal waste at Karachi’s beach and for mobilizing the civil society for launching a cleanliness campaign to sort out the issue.

He also appreciated the participation of the school students in the beach cleaning exercise to play their part in improving environment of the city.

###

Shainera Akram said on the occasion that Karachi was like her own city as she had a close association with the metropolis. She said that the relevant government agencies, every concerned person, and civil society should take part in the campaign to revive beauty of the Karachi’s beach.

He said that natural environment of the city’s coastline had to be preserved for the coming generations for their health and recreation.

###

The DC South and Shainera Akram also jointly distributed commendation certificates among the school students who took part in the cleanliness campaign.
