The Backstage Heat Is On WWE Announcer Corey Graves
The Greatest Royal Rumble was an awkward show for many, including the announcers. They had to put over the country for the progress they’ve made in recent years with women now being allowed to attend sporting events. The company line is that they hope that women will be allowed to wrestle on shows. It wasn’t just about women not being allowed to wrestle. Stephanie McMahon, Renee Young and other non-active performers were not allowed to be part of the show and it was clear that the announcers were making sure that nothing controversial was said on the air.
Corey Graves seemed to have had some remorse or second thoughts on doing the show when he commented on Instagram: “A drink to remember that no matter how bad WE think we have it, at least our women have rights and we all have freedom of expression.”
In the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer noted that there was already some heat on him for some cryptic comments made during the show.
The feeling is that Graves’ comments were understandable but he should have kept his thoughts private. Meltzer was also told that Graves is more replaceable than he thinks he is. Some people’s feelings on the Saudi Arabia trip was that it was what it was and the food was great. Others were frustrated and made it clear that saying anything (even if you have to read in between the lines) would not be taken well by management. Graves was the only person to make a read-between-the-lines remark.
