Yemen devises aid delivery mechanism to skirt Al Houthis

Cairo: The Yemeni government has devised mechanisms to ensure deliveries of humanitarian aid after the US designation of Iran-aligned Al Houthi militia as a terrorist organisation, Yemeni Prime Minister Maeen Abdul Malik has said.

Last week, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has announced that the State Department would notify Congress of its intent to designate Al Houthis as a foreign terrorist organisation.

Abdul Malik said in a video press conference Friday that the US move targets Al Houthis blamed for implicating Yemen in a severe humanitarian crisis.

###

“A committee comprising several sectors has been formed to look art any potential impact on the delivery of humanitarian assistance to those in need,” he added.

The prime minister blamed Al Houthis for the worsening humanitarian scene in Yemen.

“Famine began in areas under their control. They have recently started to threaten financial and economic institutions causing the collapse of banking and financial sector. This has directly reflected on the humanitarian crisis,” Abdul Malik said.

###

“Bowing to Al Houthis’ blackmailing sends a negative message and encourages them to use Yemenis as hostages,” he said.

Al Houthis plunged Yemen into a devastating conflict after they toppled the internationally recognised government and overran the capital Sana’a in late 2014.
